Advance Care Planning

Speaker - C. Bree Johnston (MD, MPH)

Director of Palliative Medicine for Skagit Regional Health System & Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington

Hear from Bree Johnston as she will discuss options for advance care planning and end of life decision making for people with dementia and their families. She will share various advance care planning forms and the advantages and disadvantages of each.  Dr. Johnston will also discuss the POLST and answer questions about resuscitation and advanced medical therapies. She will address concerns surrounding voluntary stopping of eating and drinking.

 

Dr. Johnston will welcome questions and discussion from participants.

Dementia and Driving Safety

Panel - Mark Lindenbaum (MD, PhD), Leslie Jackson (RN), Representative from the BPD

Medical Advisor and Board of Director for DSNW, Education Coordinator for DSNW, and Community Officer from the Bellingham Police Department

Hear from Dr, Mark Lindenbaum (MD, PhD) as he brings his years of experience in internal medicine and geriatrics to our discussion on dementia and driving safety. He will be accompanied by Leslie Jackson (RN) who has 50 years of experience in nursing. Jackson helps facilitate DSNW's in-person and remote support groups each week, where she addresses topics and concerns caregivers bring forward, including issues surrounding dementia and driving, driving safety, and redirection tools for caregivers looking to prevent their loved one from driving.

Resources for Socialization

Panel - Leslie Jackson (RN), Riley Heryford, Aria Nguyen

DSNW Education Coordinator, DSNW Program Coordinator, DSNW Media and Communications Coordinator  and former Good Times Club Program Assistant

Hear from the DSNW's education and program team as they discuss they importance of socialization when living with dementia, along with what the local community has to offer. Their presentation will cover the benefits of socialization for people living with dementia, what socialization and engagement may look like, community resources, and more.
