Communicating with Your Medical Providers to Improve Dementia Care

Speaker - Mark Lindenbaum

Retired Geriatrician and Internist | DSNW Director Board Member

Caring for someone affected by dementia is helped greatly by forming effective relationships with the medical team you work with.  Many barriers exist to good communication between the patient/caregivers and the medical team.  Among these are the rapid pace of clinical visits, reticence on the part of the affected individual and their caregiver to “make waves” or press for answers to questions, variability in the degree to which primary care providers may feel comfortable making clinical decisions for dementia management, the degree to which affected individuals and their caregivers plan for the visit and organize the information about the patient’s experience and their questions about how to proceed with care, and the difficulty caregivers may have to communicate sensitive information about a patient with memory loss to medical providers in the presence of the patient.  Dr. Mark Lindenbaum will discuss strategies for and answer questions about managing medical visits, getting questions answered and concerns addressed by the medical team, based on his 37 years of experience in clinical internal medicine and geriatrics.
